Historia filmu oparta jest na prawdziwych wydarzeniach, które miały miejsce w czasie II wojny światowej. Bohaterami opowieści są trzej lotnicy marynarki wojennej, którzy zostają wysłani na misję zwiadowczą. Ich samolot rozbija się w południowej części Oceanu Spokojnego. Żołnierze są zmuszeni dryfować na nieznanych wodach w niewielkiej łodzi ratunkowej, bez zapasów jedzenia i picia. Tylko poprzez wzajemną pomoc mogą przezwyciężyć przeciwności losu.
