Rzecz dzieje sie w 1940 roku. Lukas Beauchamp (czarny mieszkaniec wioski) zostaje złapany przy zabitym białym mężczyźnie. Wtedy trzymał w dłoni pistolet, który niedawno został odpalony. Zostaje oskarżony o morderstwo. Lukas twierdzi, że jest niewinny, ale Stevens mu nie wierzy. Pewien jego znajomy próbuje udowodnić jego niewinność.
