Nowy Jork, lata 20. Artysta Ted Cotter (Al Jolson) zauważa występującą w podrzędnych klubach Rose Sargent (Alice Faye) i pomaga jej dostać się do rewii Ziegfelda. Wkrótce dziewczyna staje się gwiazdą. Rose nie zauważa, że jej mentor darzy ją uczuciem, bowiem sama zakochana jest w hazardziście Bartonie Clintonie (Tyrone Power). Kobieta nie dostrzega zachłanności wybranka i wychodzi za niego za mąż. Niebawem Clinton popada w zatarg z prawem i zostaje aresztowany.
